PANDITA RAMABAI
{1858-1922}
Described by noted pre-Independence and secularist A. B. Shah as "the greatest woman produced by modern India and one of the greatest Indians in all history." Pandita Ramabai, born Ramabai Dongre, was an eminent social reformer and academician who worked tirelessly for the emancipation of woman.
At a time when education was forbidden to women, her learning impressed scholars in Calcutta so much that they bestowed her with the titles "Saraswati" and "Pandita".
As part of her efforts to make women self-reliant, she founded the "Arya Mahila Sabha" in 1881 in Pune, one of the first Indian feminist organizations. Pandita Ramabai then went on the establish "Sharada Sadan" a school, which helped women, especially young widows, become independent by giving them vocational training in teaching and nursing. This school has blossomed into the umbrella organization known as "Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission".
