DHONDO KESHAV KARVE
{1858-1962}
Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, better known as Maharshi Karve, was a pioneering social reformer in the field of women's welfare in India.
Maharshi Karve or Annasaheb Karve set an example for others by marring a widow, who was also the first widow student of Pandita Ramabai's pioneering "Sharada Sadan". In 1896, he opened a "Mahilashram", a shelter and a school for women, including widows, near Pune. He also started the "Mahila Vidyalaya". Maharshi Karve then established the first University for women in India with just five students, which went to become the acclaimed SNDT Women's University. Besides dedicating his life to the emancipation of women, he also campaigned tirelessly for the abolition of the caste system and the curse of untouchability.
We should not fail to commemorate him on his birthday on 18th April.
In recognition of having devoted his entire life to the service of others, the Government of India conferred upon him the Bharat Ratna in 1958.
