MOTHER TERESA
{1910-1997}
Universally acclaimed and acknowledged for her selfless service to mankind, Mother Teresa, originally an Albanian, made helping the destitute her life's mission.
26th August is a red-letter day in our history because Mother Teresa was born on this day.
In 1946, she got "call within the call" to help the poor while living among them. And so she began her missionary work with the poor and ventured our into the slums of Kolkata.
In 1950, Mother Teresa, born Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, started her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, whose objective was to look after the neglected and downtrodden people of society. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying by setting up many schools, orphanages and hospitals.
In recognition to her service, she was conferred the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and Bharat Ratna in 1980 for her humanitarian work. Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
