MAHATMA GANDHI {1869-1948}

MAHATMA GANDHI
{1869-1948}

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, wanted to free people from all forms of oppression.
Gandhiji was one of the strongest voices against the injustices of the caste systems. As part of his endeavor to uplift the lower classes, Gandhiji gave a meaningful new name to the untouchables: Harijan (People of God). Though he faced strong opposition in getting society to accept lepers and Harijans, he held on steadfastly to his beliefs. Once, he had to face a lot of flak for letting a Harijan family stay at his ashram, 'Sevagram' but he wasn't affected and eventually won his opponents over. Another time, despite opposition from ashram inmates, Gandhiji not only allowed a leprosy patient to stay with him but also personally cleaned his wounds every day. He said, "Leprosy work is not merely a medical relief but it is transforming frustration of life to joy". His entire life is an inspiring story for the centuries to come.

30th January, 1948, is a black letter day for the entire world as Mahatma Gandhi died on that day.
